Things To Know Before You Buy.

If you're going to spend a third of your life somewhere, it should be comfortable and make you happy. A
good mattress can do that. But finding your perfect sleeping surface takes plenty of time and careful
thought. Don't bargain-basement shop for a mattress. A mattress is the most important piece of furniture you
will buy. Take your time shopping and get the best one for your budget, because your sleep affects your
waking hours.

No matter if your in the market for an inner-spring, latex foam, memory foam, or air mattress, these shopping
tips will give you plenty to sleep on.

  • Look for lift and support. A good mattress will support your spine and keep it in the correct alignment.
Try the hand test. When laying on the mattress, if you're able to easily slip your hand under the small
of your back as you lay flat on your back or under your waistband as you lay on your side, then your
    body isn't being properly supported.
  • Get plenty of cushion. If a mattress doesn't offer enough cushioning, your muscles and joints will feel
stress and strain, making for unrestful sleep.  Don't be fooled into thinking that fluffy pillow tops always
mean more cushioning. Some pillow-top mattresses tend to clump and compress over time, creating a
    lumpy and uncomfortable sleeping surface.
  • Shop for adequate contouring. A good mattress should yield under the heavier parts of the body. Men
tend to have broader, heavier shoulders. Woman have broader hips. A good mattress needs to allow
the shoulders and hips to sink into the bed a bit.
  • Consider bedroom aesthetics. Know what type or style of mattress best accommodates your furniture.
If you want a more sleek look with a platform or sleigh bed, a pillow-top mattress won't work very well.
The fluffy mattresses tend to be too deep for these types of beds.
  • Don't count on comparison shopping at different stores. Manufacturers often make exclusive labels for
individual retailers.  It's a better idea to ignore brand names and simply shop for comfort.
  • Dress to test drive. Wear comfortable nonrestrictive clothing when mattress shopping.  Bring your
favorite pillow from home and get into your normal sleep position to try out the various models. Plan to
spend a minimum of 10 minutes on each mattress you're considering.
  • If your share a mattress with a partner, then shop for a mattress with that person.  Buy both a mattress
and a foundation at the same time, since they're usually designed to work together.
  • Know what's included with delivery. Before you buy, ask if there is an extra fee for set up, stairs, or
removal of the old mattress set.
  • Ask the salesperson to show you illustrated or actual "cut aways" of the interior of the different
mattress and foundation choices so you can see what's inside.
  • Don't rely on product label descriptions. One manufacturer's idea of "firm" is another's "extra-firm" lie
    down and try for yourself.
